His position was a frozen area in eastern Belgium, near the German border. On Dec. 17, 1944, Milesnick, along with an artillery observer, a radio operator, a mail clerk and a reporter from Stars and Stripes, learned the Germans were mobilizing tanks and moving on Allied positions near the town of Rocherath. Milesnick told the crowd the details of his two-day ordeal fighting the Nazis. And while he received an award for his efforts, the veteran said all of the men involved in the skirmish were key, even the newspaperman.
